The Vatican has installed the first PV panels to provide power for the papal audience hall.

Rome is generally a sunny city, and the panels are expected to provide the majority of energy needed for the operation of the hall according to AP reports. Pope Benedict XVI has made conservation of resources a significant part of his papacy and has taken steps to help the Catholic Church become a visible leader in sustainability practices.

The German-born Pope has been a leader in bringing society’s waste and its impact on the poor people of the planet to the forefront in 2005. The panels used to cover the roof of the 6,000 seat auditorium were donated by a German solar power company.
