New net metering solar bill signed into law in Washington

The number of solar customers in Washington who can own the power generated by their systems has just significantly increased.

Net metering is an agreement between a solar home or business owner and the electrical utility. It allows solar customers to build up credits with their utilities during the summer like a savings account and then use them in the winter months when solar production isn’t as robust.

Some utilities had hit the cap mandated by state law and chose to close their programs or to credit a percentage of the excess energy created.

The law, called the Solar Fairness Act, means that solar will continue to grow in Washington State and thousands more people can power their homes with the clean, limitless energy of the sun.
