Our Process Makes Going Solar Easy

1. Before You Sign

We assess your home, your energy goals, and your roof — and we’ll tell you honestly if solar isn’t the right fit. That’s the B Corp way. If it is, you’ll get a formal written proposal with time to review before signing anything.

2. Before Your Installation

We handle all the paperwork — permits, utility interconnection, and equipment ordering. Your project manager confirms your installation date a few weeks out.

3. During Your Installation

Your crew — a licensed electrician and at least two roof technicians — typically completes installation in two to three days. Before they arrive, clear the area in front of your electrical panel. When done, your lead installer walks you through your entire system so you know exactly how it works.

4. Activation and Beyond

After inspection and utility approval, your system goes live. Monitor production through your inverter app in real time. Our service team is here for the life of your system — and refer a neighbor in Washington or Oregon and you both receive up to $250 when their project completes.

A 7-Point Checklist for Choosing a Solar Installer in Oregon

Solar proposals can look similar at first. The real differences usually come down to who performs the work, what’s included in writing, and who supports your system years after installation. Use these seven questions when comparing Oregon solar companies.

1

Local presence and long-term accountability

Ask where the company's Oregon team is based, who manages the installation, and who will support the system after the project is complete. A&R Solar operates from a Tualatin office, employs its own Oregon crews, and assigns a dedicated project manager who stays with your job from proposal through activation.

2

Verified Oregon licensing

Ask to see the company's Oregon contractor license. A&R Solar holds Oregon CCB #207641.

3

Who actually installs your system

Ask whether your installers are direct employees or subcontractors, and which company is responsible for the workmanship. A&R Solar is employee-owned and doesn't subcontract installation — the crew accountable for your system today is the crew you'd call in year eight.

4

Enough detail in the proposal to actually compare

A comparable proposal should spell out the equipment, system size, estimated production, total price, financing costs, assumptions, exclusions, and installation timeline — in writing, before you're asked to sign anything. That's the standard A&R's proposal process is built around.

5

Time to review before signing

Ask whether you're given time to review the proposal without pressure to sign on the spot. A&R's process includes that review period — and if solar isn't the right fit for your home, we'll tell you that too.

6

What the warranties actually cover

Product defects, workmanship, energy production, and replacement labor are four different things, and not every company covers all four.

7

Who provides service after installation

Ask whether the company has a dedicated service team, and what support looks like five or ten years from now — not just during the sales process. A&R's service team supports your system for its full lifetime, not just the first year.

Solar Across Portland's Quadrants

Portland’s housing stock varies by quadrant, so every roof gets its own design.

North and Northeast Portland

Many bungalows and older homes have smaller or more complex roof planes that need careful layout.

Southeast Portland

Tall trees and closely spaced homes make a shading analysis essential before we recommend a layout.

Southwest Portland

Hillside properties and wooded lots change how slope and shade affect where panels perform best.

Battery Storage for Outages

We can pair solar with storage so essential circuits stay on during outages.

Your Roof, Not an Average

We design each system around your roof and how your household uses power.

Portland Permitting, Incentives, and Utility Connection

What to expect, and what we take off your plate.

Permits

A city building permit and an electrical permit. Fees typically run about $300 to $770.

Typical review

Often quick for straightforward rooftops, and several weeks when a formal review is needed.

Your utility

Most Portland customers are served by Portland General Electric. Energy Trust of Oregon incentives may apply.

We handle it

We file permits, utility paperwork, and Energy Trust paperwork as an approved trade ally, and schedule inspections.

Supported from our Tualatin office. Heating and cooling services are coming, so one trusted team can handle your home’s energy.

Celebrated by Customers

Our reputation comes from the homeowners and businesses we serve—and the peers who recognize our leadership in renewable energy across Oregon.

A&R solar came to the rescue when my original installation company no longer offered residential work. I needed my whole system removed to replace a failing roof. They came in with a fair price and worked with my schedule around the roofing work. I liked the nice techs that came at different times for each faze of the work.

Great to work with, they answer all my esoteric questions throughout the design process and the install went super smooth and fast.

My experience with A&R Solar ultimately earned five stars, not because everything went perfectly, but because of how they responded when something went wrong. I live in a condo in a connected building, with a common-element roof managed by the HOA. The solar layout needed to respect the boundary between my unit and the neighboring unit, but instead several panels and mounting points were installed over my neighbor’s unit. The original design had the property line in the wrong place; that was caught during permitting, and A&R produced corrected plans that were approved. Unfortunately, those corrected plans never made it into the installer’s workbook, so the crew arrived with the outdated layout and installed from the wrong version. I did not discover the mistake until about six weeks later, when my understandably very upset neighbor brought it up during an HOA meeting. I contacted A&R around 4:00 PM on a Tuesday. By 4:55 PM, they had confirmed what happened, accepted responsibility, and committed to fixing it. There was no defensiveness or effort to shift blame. Gene was extremely communicative throughout the process. He kept me informed, offered to speak directly with my affected neighbors, and I received zero pushback on anything I asked for regarding the repair work. A&R treated the issue as a priority. They rearranged other installation schedules so they could move the affected panels the following Monday, less than a week after I first contacted them. They also subcontracted a roofing company to repair the areas where mounting hardware had been installed and provided documentation and warranty coverage for that work. This was a significant and preventable mistake, and finding out about it six weeks later at an HOA meeting was not how I wanted to learn about it. But I think you learn much more about a contractor when something goes wrong than when everything goes according to plan. A&R took full ownership, prioritized the correction, communicated clearly, and followed through. Based on how they handled the situation, I would absolutely work with them again.

Heartily recommend A&R! They were excellent throughout the process: planning, establishing a timeline, delivery of equipment and installation. Everyone I met was friendly, enthusiastic about solar, and did great work. Appreciated little things like they took the "more complicated, but nicer looking" way to route cables through the house, and in general their attention to detail.

A great experience all the way through, from planning to powering up. The system designer was better informed about local regs than other companies we asked, the installation went smoothly, and on connection day the support team walked me through a glitch with our generator switch.

A R Solar was vey helpful with our decision to go solar. From the start, there were no sales pressure tactics. There was vey clear communication of requirements, design, trade offs, and what we can expect. Once engaged, they were able to fit us on an earlier schedule. During installation, they had to make a small design change that required resubmitting our permits with the city. They worked their best to expedite that process. We did have to wait for the city to finish inspection and PSE to energize the system. Despite the minor delays, the system was operational before their original estimated date and we were able to grab the last days of sun in the summer. The installation technicians were very knowledgeable and gave me a run down of the system after the installation. Happy to see the exact net metering numbers in the app which helps keep track of total savings, etc. Current performance in the summer seems really good. Will know exact annual savings after first full year of seasonal cycle. A R Solar guarantee a minimum annual offset from solar production. Given that PSE is likely to switch to asymmetric net metering soon, it was easy for me to make that decision to lock in symmetric net metering prices for the next 30 years now. Combined with the impending energy price crisis from current geopolitical factors, this decision was easier for me to take.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the best solar installers in Portland?

The best solar installer for your home is one you can actually verify: local licensing, direct employees rather than subcontractors, a detailed written proposal, real warranty coverage, and a service team that’s still around years after installation. A&R Solar meets each of these — we’ve served Portland-metro homeowners for over a decaded, hold Oregon CCB #207641, and use employee crews only.

Most residential solar systems in Oregon start around $21,000 and up before incentives, depending on system size and home energy needs. Oregon offers several programs that reduce your net cost, including Energy Trust of Oregon cash incentives for eligible customers. A&R Solar will model your specific production, incentives, and lifetime savings before you sign anything.

Oregon requires PGE and Pacific Power to offer net metering to residential solar customers. When your system produces more than you use, credits roll forward on your bill — offsetting what you’d pay during lower-production winter months. It’s one of the key reasons solar pencils out financially in the Portland area.

Grid-tied solar systems shut down automatically during outages to protect utility workers. Pairing your system with a home battery like the Tesla Powerwall or Franklin Whole Home Battery keeps essentials running during outages and uses stored energy at night. A&R Solar installs both solar and battery storage across the Portland metro area.

A&R Solar serves the greater Portland metro area from our Tualatin office, including Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Lake Oswego, Tigard, Sherwood, Wilsonville, Oregon City, and surrounding communities in Multnomah, Washington, and Clackamas counties.

Yes. Portland averages around 4 peak sun hours per day — enough to make solar financially worthwhile. Systems are sized specifically for Northwest weather patterns. Net metering credits from summer production offset lower winter output, and monitoring tools let you track performance year-round.

The Energy Trust of Oregon offers cash incentives to eligible PGE and Pacific Power customers who install solar. The amount varies based on system size and utility. A&R Solar files all Energy Trust paperwork on your behalf — you don't have to navigate it alone.

Compare more than the total price. Verify the company's Oregon licenses, find out whether employees or subcontractors will perform the work, and review the equipment, production assumptions, warranties, and project exclusions in writing. You should also ask who will provide service after installation, and look for reviews and completed projects from Oregon homeowners.
