21 Feb A&R Solar Completes Washington’s Largest Solar Project
Washington’s largest solar project is now complete.
The 1.27 megawatt project sits atop the new IKEA store in Renton, which opened Wednesday.
Here is the project by the numbers:
- 1.27 MW
- 3,250 solar panels
- 4,770 ballast trays (they hold the panels)
- 22 inverters
- 16-25 crew members, including electricians, roof techs, and general laborers
- Will produce 1,261,000 kWh of electricity, the equivalent of reducing 886 tons of carbon dioxide or providing electricity for 131 homes per year
So yes, solar really does work in the Pacific Northwest. We get roughly the same amount of sun as Germany, which leads the world in solar installations.
The array is the 45th solar project for IKEA in the U.S. The Swedish-based company has solar on 90 percent of its U.S. locations with a total generation goal of more than 40 MW. A December report shows 71 of the Fortune 100 companies currently have renewable energy or sustainability targets. A total of 83 companies from around the world have now committed to going 100 percent renewable through the RE100 initiative. Google announced in December that it will meet its renewable energy target in 2017.
