Solar Drag Race This Weekend

Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines, or eh… align your collectors the 2008 Solar Drag Race is this weekend at the Confluence Technology Center in Wenatchee, Washington from 11am to 2pm.

The team from South Whidbey High School set a new World record in 2007traveling 820 feet in 29.7 seconds. This year, Chehalis and Wenatchee High Schools as well as Republic Middle School will be aided by a donation of solar cells from REC Silicon, the sponsor of the World’s only solar drag race, as they challenge for the overall title and look to set a new World record.

The race cars must be completely solar powered using electrical engines. Acceleration to speeds up to 50 MPH is said to be possible in the race. The cars must be equipped with brakes and operated by a person who has at least a learners permit. Entries for the high school division are said to involve about $5,000 worth of investment while $10,000 is about the max investment recommended for the college division.

This will be the fourth funning of the Solar Drag Race and participants in this year’s event are hopeful that the World Record will fall again.
